Some musicians are household names. Others are the best-kept secret of the musicians themselves — the artists that guitarists, jazz composers, and harmony obsessives whisper about with reverence. Toninho Horta is very much the latter.
One of Brazil’s most sophisticated guitarists and a towering figure in the música mineira tradition, Horta has spent decades weaving harmonies of extraordinary complexity and beauty — the kind that make fellow musicians stop mid-conversation and just listen. A collaborator and kindred spirit of Milton Nascimento, Lô Borges, and Beto Guedes, he is an essential voice of the legendary Clube da Esquina movement, that quietly revolutionary circle of artists from Minas Gerais who reimagined what Brazilian music could be.
